So were off to a late start, but hope some who plan or want to attend AR2011 can pitch in for a volunteer shift at our booth.

For Animals, Its As If Someone Hit The Crisis Rewind Button
Kinship Circle Extends Japan Animal Aid Through June "We're in emergency sheltering mode for animals of the quake-tsunami," says Kinship Circle executive director Brenda Shoss. "But for the radiation part, the disaster restarts with each evacuation. Residents flee and police barricades go up. Districts 20 kilometers from Fukushima's nuclear reactor have been sealed since April, with farmed and companion animals trapped inside. Recent radiation hot spots have closed off areas as far as 40-50km from the plant.
Kinship Circle-JEARS teams have rescued/fed animals in Kawamata, and tracked expanding blockades from Hirono, Kawauchi, Naraha, Iitate to parts of Minami Soma and Iwaki City. Japan resident Hoshi Hiroshi has defied police orders to heroically reach starving animals inside the 20km exclusion zone. Other locals who ask to remain anonymous (working with Kinship Circle-JEARS) also risk arrest to save animals in nuclear ghost towns.

Animal Stories From Japan
Four Teeny Surprises In Fukushima JEARS-Kinship Circle volunteers and scores of animals occupy two rented rooms at the Club Lohas Hotel in Inawashiro, Fukushima. Among the rescued is Mimii-chan, a thin mutt who lives for treats. But not today. We find Mimii-chan pretzeled into a corner...and discover a teeny puppy latched on to her! The traumatized dog had never even shown a fat belly. In seconds, another boy pops out. Then a wee girl...Over a half hour later, more squeals... MORE
Helping Animals In 20-40km Zone Kinship Circles Sister Michael Marie holds 2 of 7 rescued chickens, weak from lack of food or water in the Namie, Fukushima exclusion area. Kinship-JEARS volunteers have aided hundreds of chickens since April evacuations left them stranded. Some birds are so fragile that rescuer Fran Conigliaro takes them to his home near Tokyo... Wearing Tyveck suits and masks, we venture to the 30km line to look for more animals. A police patrol detains us, but finally lets us pass... MORE
Our job in Japan is not quite done. This "tri-saster" remains huge for animal victims. We hope to keep our vet tech volunteer, Alex Lane, in Japan through summer as JEARS' Susan Roberts has described her help as invaluable... Your support is outstanding and we are so deeply grateful. Kinship Circle
