Save the Del Mar Fairgounds

The Del Mar Fairgrounds is an irreplaceable cultural asset of San Diego, indeed all of Southern California.  Governor Schwarzeneger has proposed selling the land to help close the states current budget gap.  He claims that the sale proceeds of as much as $500,000,000 are needed to meet the states obligations.  While we dont doubt that a high density housing project would generate that kind of land value, we think the proposal is unsound.  It will only account for 2 or 3 percent of the budget gap and then what?

The 400 acres perched on the Pacific is mostly open space which compliments the nearby Torrey Pines State Preserve and public beaches to the north.  The architecture of the buildings and the racetrack call to mind a more genteel San Diego and a more leisurely life style.  One can almost feel the presence of screen idols like Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Jimmy Durante, all of whom were once habitues of the track during racing season.  One can almost hear the music of Burt Bacharach or the sounds of the Beach Boys entertaining the Del Mar crowds.  Why would we want to trade this for more crowded freeways and highways which cannot handle their current traffic volume?

Del Mar is not just an asset for coastal San Diego.  Los Angelinos use San Diegos beaches and low density lifestyle to help them cope with the smog and overcrowding that are part of their everyday lives.  Kids from all over Southern California compete here in 4-H events.  Southern Californians love the excitement of the annual fair.  People from throughout the State participate in events such as horseshows all during the year, the wood working show, art festival, floral and garden show, bridal show, boat show, gem show, gun show, car show, a multitude of charitable events, and Parade of Christmas lights to name a few.  The Fairgounds is not just a real estate asset or development opportunity.  It is part of the soul of San Diego and all of California.

Join us in telling the grasping politicians of Sacramento hands off the Del Mar Fairgrounds!!  Leave it as is.  We do not want it sold!!
