Shut Down or Regulate RateMyCop.com, End the Fear for Families of Law Enforcement Officers

I am the wife of a law enforcement officer. His job is very dangerous and he takes pride in the fact that he gets to protect the citizens of our community. When he became an officer, we took drastic measures to ensure that our information was kept private. With the violence against officers that I have seen recently, it scares me that someone may come after our family if they don't like the way my husband handles their situation, when all the while they were the ones breaking the law in the first place. When my husband was going through the training process to become a law enforcement officer, he would come home with stories of biker gangs, gang members, and random people tracking down an officers family to either threaten, harass, or in a few cases murder them. The founders and followers of RateMyCop.com would say that it's just a way to bring attention to certain corrupt officers  and allow their departments to discipline them. I understand that they feel this will help in their future dealings with law enforcement officers, but the correct way to do this would be to file an official complaint with the department. This is the best way to take care of any issues with an officer.  At that, they could file their complaint with Internal Affairs. RateMyCop.com is nothing like the other rating websites, in the fact that officers are usually targets for violence rather than teachers, neighbors, and ex's. Then there is the case of what ifs. What if my husband had to arrest or deal with someone that is not cooperative, or tries to fight him. Now, because my husband has to get physical with the person to protect himself and uphold the law, is he going to get blamed because someone was upset that he was rough with them to do his job. Please people think about it. I do understand that their are those cases where as officer may abuse their authority, but the correct way to fight this would be to file a complaint, not post his name over the internet for others to target. I'm starting this petition to ask Internal Affairs to either shut down or regulate the RateMyCop.com website. In regulating, I mean, allow the persons who post their occurances on the website to continue, only instead of posting the officers name and badge number, they may post the state in which the occurance happened. That way they will feel like they are doing some good for the followers of the site, while keeping the officers identities anonymous. This will help make our protectors of our communities and their families feel a little more at ease. The job is hard enough as it is, they don't need the added stress.

Thank you.

We the undersigned, are asking you to help the protectors of our communities and their families feel a little more at ease by shutting down or regulating the popular website RateMyCop.com.
This website is a tool that many followers use to rate their interations with law enforcement officers. This website posts the city, state, name, and badge number of the law enforcement officer involved. This puts the officer and their family members at risk for threats, harassment, and at time acts of violence.
Please take the necessary steps to ensure that this website does not give out the names and badge numbers of the officers that are found on it's site. These bits of information are on any tickets or paperwork that a person receives when breaking the law. This information is not intended to be plastered on the internet, it was intended to allow the person to take care of their crime and if they have an issue with that officer, to aid in filing an official complaint with the department.
Please protect the officer of our country and their families.

Thank you for taking the time to read our letter.
