No Second Power Plant in Coastal North County

NRG West has applied to the California Energy Commission to build a second, 458 mega-watt gas fired power plant on coastal lands in Carlsbad, California.  Unlike the existing 55 year old power plant which uses ocean water for cooling, the proposed power plant is air cooled and does not need to be near the coast.  Demolishing the old power plant is not a part of this project.    It will increase air pollution by approximately 900,000 tons per year.  Greenhouse gas emissions have not been fully mitigated and fossil-fuel burning power plants will become obsolete in the future. There are significant safety concerns with the proposed power plant less than 60 feet from busy I-5.  It will damage the economy, hurt tourism and have significant negative effects on views. Do not saddle the San Diego County Coastal Region with an ugly, polluting monster for the NEXT 55 years.
California Energy Commission:We the undersigned opposed the Carlsbad Energy Center Project on grounds that it should not be located on precious coastal lands.  The project is not consistent with the goals of the North San Diego County region's residents' desire for a clean, healthy environment.  The project is not coastal dependent and therefore, can be located anywhere.  The coast is not an appropriate location for such an intense industrial use.
Thank you for your consideration.
