The "other" Energy Crisis

MARCH 3, 2009 IS ENERGY INDEPENDENCE DAY IN AMERICA.

CLICK ON THE PHOTO OF THE "MINUTEMAN" AT http://www.ea-21.org/ TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR EFFORT ON THAT DAY TO LAUNCH A PEOPLE'S REVOLUTION -- AMERICA'S ENERGY REVOLUTION -- TO END OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

Sponsored by Americans United for Energy Independence and the national coalition of members cities of the federal Clean Cities Program we will meet in Washgton that day to call on Congress and the new Administration to take steps to reduce dependence on imported oil.

To understand what we advocate, it is important to recognize that the steps the Administration has proposed for reducing global warming overlap with, but are not identical to the steps that need to be taken to eliminate dependence on imported oil.   The global warming crisis and the energy independence crisis are distinct  - so both require their own distinct attention and solutions.

In particular, Wind, Solar, Geothermal, and perhaps nuclear are ways to immediately reduce the use of coal and gas and produce clean electric power.  But, because nearly no oil is used for producing electricity these clean, green alternative electric power technologies can do next to nothing to immediately reduce dependence on foreign oil.  Only when electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids eventually have replaced the 150 million gasoline-powered vehicles on the road can these technologies be used to help get off of oil and onto the grid.  As a practical matter, that transition will take years.    But America cannot wait.  We refuse to wait!

We need a solution right now that will end our sending a half trillion dollars a year to the foreign producers of oil  who then use these petrodollars to spread hatred, buy weapons, proliferate nuclear technology and finance terrorism.  The only such option that is available immediately is alternative liquid fuels (including certain biofuels).

We believe that it is essential that our nation commit itself today to promoting these alternative fuels and to seeing that alternative liquid fuels are produced cleanly, safely, without raising food prices, and without destroying agricultural lands or forests.

We the undersigned support Energy Independence Day in America - March 3, 2009 and call on your new Administration to take steps immediately to start the process of ending our dependence on imported oil.
