This State Has Won a Terrible Prize " The Worst State for Animals"

In politics, there's a lot of talk about red vs. blue states. But in the world of animal rights, the only color that really matters is maroon. That's the color one leading animal rights organization uses to indicate that a state has terrible animal protection laws. This year, Mississippi has been given the the organization's biggest dishonor: the worst state for Animals in America.

Sign the petition and demand that Mississippi step up their animal protection laws!

While many states have made efforts to pass regulations that would enshrine animal welfare in their legal system, Mississippi has seemingly done nothing to help their feathered and furry friends for years.

Activists point out that Mississippi still has no felony laws for animal neglect or abandonment, veterinarians in the state aren't required to report abuse, and there is no mandatory forfeiture of animals when the owner is convicted of animal abuse.

If Mississippi officials could make just one of these changes, they would show the rest of the country that they take animal abuse and neglect seriously. Because animal abandonment and neglect is such a cruel practice, classifying it as a felony could make a real difference in getting these animal abusers off the streets and protecting the states' animal citizens.

The tactic of name and shame has worked before. Last year, Kentucky was at the bottom of the list. After making a few changes, they have moved up three spots to be the 47th worst state for animal rights. While they still have a LONG way to go, the laws they enacted throughout 2019 will no doubt keep animals safer.

With your help, we can send a message and convince Mississippi to create a legal regime that protects animals as much as, or even more than, other states. Sign the petition and ask Mississippi to make animal abandonment and neglect a felony in the Magnolia State.
