Congress, don't ban military chapels for same-sex weddings!
In a particularly homophobic move, conservative US Representatives are tangling our nation's security with the gay marriage issue. A crucial bill that sets military salaries and defense policy would typically be a house no brainer with bi-partisan support.
But tacked onto that bill is a new law that would prevent military chapels from being used for same-sex weddings.
There is no reason in the world that same-sex military couples should not have access to the same wedding facilities as their straight counterparts. Furthermore, this move brings the gay marriage debate into an arena where it does not belong. It doesn't just compromise LGBT rights; it also puts our national safety up for debate. It's a malicious measure which could force Congressmen who do NOT oppose gay marriage to vote against it.
Tell members of Congress to vote no on the current incarnation of the Defense bill!
You have before you a military bill which is mostly uncontroversial. However, it has on it a completely irrelevant provision that denies same-sex couples from the right to use military chapels to get married. We the undersigned find it particularly despicable that Republican representatives are tying the gay marriage debate to a bill essential to our nation's security. There is no reason in the world that same-sex military couples should not have access to the same wedding facilities as their straight counterparts. Please do not sign this bill as it currently reads. The prohibition against gays using military chapels should be struck out first, and we call on you to demand that be done!
