Let Nevadans Fight Climate Change and Promote Energy Independence

Solar energy will reduce reliance on dirty power plants that contribute to climate change. Nevada is at particular risk of water shortages and killing heat waves as a result of climate change. So why is Nevada's state leadership dragging its feet on measures that will encourage more solar retailing?

The three-person Nevada Public Utilities Commission has effectively sold out to mainstream, polluting utility companies. This commission has ruled that people who produce excess solar energy from their own panels will be paid only pennies when that extra power goes into the grid to power someone else's home. This ruling is empirically unfair and punitive to people who had the courage to pioneer solar use in their communities. Please join me in telling the Nevada governor and state legislature to reject efforts to hobble solar development and pay solar users retail rates for the energy that they create for the grid.

Dear Governor Sandoval:

We the undersigned are dismayed to learn that the Nevada Public Utilities Commission is undermining the growth of solar energy use in Nevada. Specifically, the commission has disappointed many pioneer solar panel users by setting the price for excess solar energy at a wholesale, rather than a retail rate. This move will stifle rather than encourage the use of solar power in a state where sun is the top resource. In the long view, solar curbs the damages that are accruing as a result of climate change. You should foster solar power, not discourage it. Please reject efforts to hobble solar development and pay solar users retail rates for the energy that they create for the grid.
