Tell Auburn, Indiana to Protect LGBT Individuals

Lawmakers in Auburn, Indiana are writing a new city non-discrimination policy. But when it comes to discrimination against the LGBT community, they think a document written in 1964 is good enough. The city's common council is saying that the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 offers sufficient protecton of LGBT individuals.

Nevertheless, they obviously think somebody needs protecting, or they wouldn't be writing new guidelines, right? To draft a non-discrimination policy and purposefully exclude gays, lesbians, and transgender individuals is an act of discrimination itself. Please join with me in asking Auburn's council to include specific LGBT protections in their new anti-discrimination guidelines upon second reading late this month.

Dear Auburn Common Council:

We the undersigned are sad to learn that you are writing a brand new anti-discrimination policy for the city, and yet you do not want to include language that protects LGBT individuals. You are citing the 1964 Civil Rights Act as a reason to make this omission. If the Civil Rights Act is good enough protection for those in danger of discrimination, then why do you need a new, city policy? The answer if fairly obvious to us. You wish to protect some of your local residents, but not all of them. Please reconsider this move when your new policy comes up for a second reading later this month.
