EDIT: To clarify, the uniform wouldn't change. The only difference is that any freedoms given to one gender would also be given to the other, and any contradictory items would be agreed upon by a selection of pupils and staff.
Attitudes towards gender discrimination are formed in schools, and as such ours has an obligation to introduce more acceptant and modern attitudes towards gender. The least we can do to practice what we preach on gender equality is to end discrimination on something as superficial as clothing.
There is nothing wrong with trying to maintain an environment of decorum and professionalism with a uniform, but taking away the unnecessary gender discrimination will make uniform easier to police, less restrictive to people who identify as non-binary, and end never ending arguments of "why can they wear this when I can't".
The world is becoming a more acceptant and gender-fluid place, and the school has a responsibility to reflect that.
