We must hold the high school seniors accountable. LHS should be a sanctuary for learning, not bigotry!

This past week a unifying experience for this years 2021 class of LHS seniors was twisted into something divisive and callous. MAGA and Blue Lives Matter flags were flown across the senior parking lot. As grotesque stunt to prove certain individuals superiority over others.

As an alumni I have seen and experienced harsh punishment from LHS, for much more elementary and harmless actions. The actions displayed by this specific group of seniors promoted: bigotry, fearmongering, and racism. This not only made BIPOC students feel uncomfortable, but afraid to step into LHS classrooms with their colleagues.

LHS will always hide behind the high national and local academic ranking. Yet, they continue foster an unsafe learning environment for BIPOC students. LHS is supposed to foster a safe learning environment. In which, all individuals are equal. Thus, we must hold every individual equally accountable for harmful/negligible behavior. We must not let LHS succumb to superior collectivism which seems to be covertly running rampant through our community.

Seniors have enough on their minds, as they prepare/apply for colleges and brace for goodbyes. Now, they must actively combat the subliminal racism that continues to persist throughout Livingston.

We are asking the following seniors who participated in hoisting these flags up to be held accountable— the school must hold those individuals accountable. Livingston high school has “disciplined” students for much less. We are also asking these students universities be notified of their actions. We will accept nothing less. Their actions enabled hateful speech and rhetoric from parents and other fellow students. Their actions did not occur in a vacuum, we must look at the collective picture.
