Don't Kill the Famous Wild Boar of Gloucestershire

Three centuries ago, the wild boars of the England disappeared. They had gone extinct and hadn’t been seen in the wild till recently when they started reappearing in the Forest of Dean after several escaped from a wild boar farm.

Now the animals are commonplace in the forest, and it is the only place the once extinct animals can be seen in their natural habitat.

But now some locals and government officials are putting the pigs in their crosshairs. The Forestry Commision has set up metal gun towers for marksmen to take out the pigs to bring their numbers down. They are hoping hunters will take out up to 2/3rds of the country’s only wild population. They believe a cull is the only way to control the population.

But there are other ways to ensure the wild boar population doesn’t explode. By making it illegal to feed the pigs, implementing an education campaign that teaches residents and tourists how to live with the boar and using contraception instead of bullets we can ensure the pigs’ numbers don’t spiral out of control and that they continue to be part of the forest for years to come.

These animals disappeared once, and now that they are back, the population should be protected and embraced. Let’s call on officials to make the humane choice and implement a contraception campaign for the wild boar of Gloucestershire rather than killing them. Please sign the petition and help shield these pigs from a marksman’s bullet.
