Hundreds of Manatees and Sea Turtles Are Dying in Red and Green Slime

When hundreds of dead manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine mammals started washing up all over Florida's beach shores, the cause was no real surprise. A toxic combination of a red tide, blue-green algae and brown algae have been plaguing Florida's waters, creating red and green slime that is killing off sea animals and making beachgoers and their pets fall ill.

Unfortunately, the situation didn't have to become grim or deadly. But thanks to bad policy decisions, Florida Governor Rick Scott — and 2018 Senate candidate — exacerbated the problem ten-fold. And now he has got to go.

Scott's tenure as governor is just about over, but he is vying for a Senate seat. Please sign this petition demanding that Rick Scott withdraw his candidacy for U.S. Senate now.

Rick Scott has shown repeatedly that he has no interest in protecting the people or animals of Florida. When questioned about Florida's red tide problem, Scott shirked responsibility, arguing that it is a natural occurrence. While that is somewhat true, Scott failed to mention that the problem is made much worse, and more toxic, by pollution — and that Scott himself fought against stricter pollution limits for sewage, manure and fertilizer runoff.

He has also weakened regulation of nutrients that contribute to algae blooms, and has not backed policies designed to prevent climate change, the effects of which make algae blooms spread. These irresponsible decisions have justly earned him the nickname "Red Tide Rick."

As governor, Rick Scott proved that he does not have Florida residents' best interest at heart. Why should he have another chance to represent the people of Florida in the Senate?

For the sake of Florida's waters, marine life, and residents, please sign now to demand Rick Scott withdraw from the Senate race.
