To facilitate hope and healing in community members who experience the detrimental effects of bullying by creating a positive value-oriented response model that provides follow-up support to M.O.B.'s National Bullying Hot Line callers who report bullying issues. To equip educators, parents, and other adults in children’s lives with information and skills needed to promote institutional changes that increase school safety and mutual respect. To address the problem of bullying holistically, recognizing the negative impact bullying has on perpetrators as well as victims, both immediately and lifelong.
Today we know that bullying can have long-term effects on both the victim—and the bully. As an adult, the bully has a greater risk of being involved in criminal behavior, and both the bully and the victim may suffer from future health and mental health problems. In fact, years after the bullying occurs, adults who were bullied as teens have higher levels of depression and poorer self-esteem than other adults. And, six out of 10 kids identified as bullies in middle school are convicted of a crime by the time they reach age 24. Increasing the number of adults in prison and leading to incarcerated adults that cost taxpayers annually over 40 billion dollars. The majority of victims of bulling studies show victims have more anxiety, sadness, sleep difficulties, low self-esteem, headaches, stomach pain, and general tension than their peers who are not being bullied.
Eighty-three percent of bullying incidents receive no intervention and continue to happen making victims that may become violent, either at the time of bullying or in the future. Every day eight hundred thousand kids are bullied and as a result one hundred sixty thousand stay home afraid to go to school, increasing truancy and dropout rates enabling greater bearing to the United States not being competitive in a global marketplace where the majority of workers impacted from bullying in schools continue to increase the skills gap of qualified science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workers.
As we now know through research if the victim of bullying or the bully does not have proper treatment then bullying isn’t limited to the school yard, colleges or even classroom. It happens everywhere. In fact, more adults are reporting being bullied at work. We hear about kids bullying each other all the time, but a new survey shows 1 in 6 adults are being bullied in the workplace. It shows up as co-worker or managers giving “Verbal abuse, work sabotage, social and physical isolation. Making for a hostile environment for employees to work and in some cases leading to suicide because victims feelings of having no other choice. At home bully and victim lead to greater family and relationship issues from violence, anxiety, depression and low self-esteem tearing families apart and perpetuation a new generation of bullies and victims.
M.O.B.'s Population and Scope
Thus the population of focus for the National Hotline is teenage children between the ages of 13 and 18 years and the parents of children in the age range of 5 to 12 years of age. The scope of M.O.B.'s project is to provide a safe place for teens (children) and their families to receive supportive care during any point of the bullying situation, appropriate referral to resources and intervention through advocacy.
