Gastroschisis awareness day uk

Make 30th July gastroschisis awareness day as it is in many other countries around the world. Help spread awareness and find a cause.
Gastroschisis was classed as a rare birth defect however is becoming more and more common. There is a 10% fatality from this birth defect. Babies born with the defect can also develop issues from the birth defect later in life.

My daughter was born with the birth condition Gastroschisis. I had to be induced into labour at 37 weeks to ensure she was safe. At an hour old she had a life saving operation which took 3 hours. For the first week of life she was on morphine. I did not get to hold her till she was 3 days old. She was fed lipid and ton through a drip and could not drink milk till she was 11 days old. She was discharged from hospital at 23 days old.

This was a very difficult start for us. However in terms of this condition it was straight forward. Harriet has had no problems since but that does not mean she won't have any problems. We have been very lucky so far.

There is a 10% fatality with Gastroschisis. Children born with the defect can have a number of issues such as blockages or twists in their intestines. They may need to be tube fed. And these issues may not show until years later. Side effects can also occur due to the ton and lipid the baby is fed to give them nutrients when born.

I want ant to spread awareness of this growing defect and find out what causes this.
