Smokey,my cat of 5 years,was recently diagnosed with FIV and eventhough I knew we were gonna have to put him to sleep humanely in the future, it wasn't his time to go yet and it certainly wasn't humane in the way in which he died.We just began using a litter box 1.5 weeks before his passing,because the vet told us to keep him inside now because his disease was contagious to other felines. I believe he contracted it from a scratch or bite from a stray ferrel cat,which had been invading his territory.His behavior and health took a turn for the worse after that.
Once we started using the litter box,with Arm & Hammer then Scoop Away litter,I noticed once he would clean himself (paws) I would notice pieces of litter going into his mouth.I didn't think anything about it because surely a litter manufacturer wouldn't put something dangerous in their product considering that all kittens and cats groom themselves and litter is bound to get swallowed during these times?? I was wrong.1.5 weeks after he began using the litter box,he had bloody diarrhea the night before his death (that had what looked like black beans clumped together) and immediately after another one the next morning at 4:30am,he ran across the room meowing painfully,fell to the floor on his side,could not move his body,started breathing very rapidly and you could tell he was struggling to breath.Then he threw all 4 of his legs out in front of him,painfully meowed again a few more times,pulled his legs back in,his eyes began dilating to the point that his whites were not visible,his chest stops moving for 20-30 seconds, then 1 deep inhale of air.He done this 4 times and on the last one you could tell he couldn't fight to breathe anymore and everything stopped.This lasted for 35-45 minutes.
My best friend just went through the most excruciating,painful death possible. I am not only devastated over his loss,but more devastated because of how/why he died.He could've continued going outside for bathroom duties,instead of using a litter box with something lethal,if I had known how dangerous this stuff is.I would've been using a safe litter had I known. Breathing in the dust can also cause damage. Since there is absolutely no way to keep track of what your cat does when its using the litter box or just after it has gotten out (licking paws,grooming with litter still attached to paws,licking/eating litter due to a deficiency,scooping litter/ stirs up dust,etc) every ingredient used to produce litter should be safe,even if a cat happens to eat it purposely. Sodium Benzodite swells to 15 times its size once moisture hits it and it should be BANNED from use in all cat litter.If it is not banned,there should be a ENLARGED WARNING/SAFETY LABEL on the outside of the box or bag (on the front of the box at the top or other highly visible space) that clearly states the DANGERS.Don't put it in text that's so small one has to get a magnifying glass to see it.
Is this gonna decrease sales?? I hope and pray it TERMINATES sales.
If you are a cat owner/lover/admirer and/or a dog owner,please please help put a stop to the innocent deaths of felines.Dogs that (unfortunately,unknowingly) eat cat litter,for the unfavorable reason that they do,are in danger too.It can coat the lungs,esophagus,stomach and intestines and draw out all of their moisture.Its a painful death sentence.
