These Animals Went Extinct on Mainland Australia. A Breeding Program is Successfully Bringing Them Back!

Once upon a time, the iconic Tasmanian Devil lived all over the mainland area of Australia, roaming the dry forests and coastal woodlands. Today though, their population has shrunk so much that they're only living on the island of Tasmania. Their population is continuing to decrease and they're officially listed as Endangered.

Luckily, scientists are working hard to reverse this trend. A breeding program in mainland Australia is now seeing incredible results, with 10 babies ("joeys") born in just the first half of 2025 alone!

The Australian government must support the work of this research team to help continue with its breeding program. Sign the petition to ensure this team is able to keep building and growing the Tasmanian Devil population in Australia!

Related to the opossum, these marsupials are extremely important to the ecosystems around them. As carnivores, they help keep wildlife populations in check and balanced and even protect ecosystems against invasive species! They even help keep other species healthy and disease-free by acting as scavengers, clearing out carcasses that could otherwise negatively impact the food chain.

For generations, farmers feared the Tasmanian Devil's impact on their livestock and so they persecuted and hunted the animals nearly until the point of extinction. In fact, they are currently listed as Extinct on mainland Australia. Now, humans are continuing to hurt Tasmanian Devils through habitat destruction and human development projects, as well as climate change impacting the environments around them.

It's our fault that these incredible and famous animals nearly died out entirely. So it's humans' responsibility to help their populations recover and rebound! And to do that, we need the dedication and hard work of researchers at the Aussie Ark's Barrington Tops sanctuary, who are leading the largest Tasmanian Devil breeding program in mainland Australia.

Sign the petition to urge the Australian government to increase its support for this wonderful conservation program!
