"A Des Moines man was arrested after he adopted two dogs in March and then left them to die in an apartment, police said.
"In late March, David James Goodburn, 21, adopted the dogs from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, according to a criminal complaint.
"Goodburn then left the dogs in an apartment without food and water, where they eventually died, the complaint said.
"ARL of Iowa Executive Director Tom Colvin confirmed Goodburn adopted the dogs from the shelter and that they starved to death. On May 18, a strong odor was smelled coming from Goodburn's apartment, the complaint said. The power to the apartment was also cut, the complaint said.
""It's believed Goodburn intentionally left the dogs to die," the complaint said," according to the Des Moines Register.
Imagine what this was like for those defenseless dogs.
They were stuck in a shelter with the threat of euthanization hanging over their heads, hoping beyond hope that some kind human would adopt them and give them a forever home.
They must have been overjoyed when Goodburn scooped them up.
But that joy soon turned to ashes.
You know how it feels when you've skipped a meal.
Multiply that by 1000, and you'll get a sense of what it was like for these poor animals to starve to death.
Little by little the pain grew in their belly, as their tongues and noses when totally dry from lack of water.
They whimpered and cried, trusting the one they loved to come back and rescue them.
He never did. Their trust was betrayed.
Their only mercy was death.
Someone like this must be punished in the most severe way.
That's why we're asking Bernie Sanders to lead a movement in Congress that would increase punishments for convicted animal abusers.
He has been a long-term advocate for animal rights, and has co-sponsored numerous pieces of legislation to protect endangered species, as well as to combat animal cruelty. He's the perfect person for the job.
