Unity with Diversity- EMBRACE. EDUCATE. UNITE.

Since January of 2017 our club has sought to celebrate diversity in the Elwood school community. Our club name is based on a quote by Mahatma Gandhi, which states, “our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and test of our civilization.” Our club’s motto is Embrace. Educate. Unite. We have strived to live out this motto by attending Unity Day parades, organizing Black History Month showcases, and providing a safe space for students to discuss issues of culture, race, and heritage. We have been recognized by our district, our community, and even local state legislature for our efforts. We are proud of what we have accomplished. However, we know we need to do more. Right now our voices are needed more than ever. We will not stand by silent when our classmates and community members are in pain. We want our school and local community to know that we are here to support all of them- especially those most directly and personally affected by racism. We plan to share resources to our community, plan events where students can vocalize their feelings and/or offer support to those in need, and work to ensure that Elwood is a place where every person feels safe, seen, respected, and welcome.
