Keep Old Ballard Beautiful: Urge the Historic Board to Adopt Mandatory Design Standards

As mandated by City Council, EXISTING STREET PERGOLAS MUST BE REPLACED OR MODIFIED BY THE END OF 2023.

We have a unique opportunity to ensure pergola design aligns with the historic character of Ballard Avenue NW.

Please endorse Board adoption of mandatory design standards developed by Heliotrope Architects.

Size. Maintain a pergola scale in keeping with the human scale of Ballard Ave buildings and storefronts.

* Maximum 12x20 pergola size, which accommodates 2 farmers' market stalls, while not overlapping building facades.

Transparency. Full enclosure of dining pergolas to be avoided if possible.

* Specify use of glass. Plastic is not transparent and looks temporary.

Quality. New, and essentially permanent, pergolas need to look attractive and be built well, just like other structures in the District.

* What gets built should not be allowed to detract from the character of the district - it is Ballard Avenue's distinct character that made it a success in the first place.
