Allowing HCA's, who have a current Advanced EMTs license, privilages to start peripheral IV's

I believe that Health Care Assistants (HCA's) who are trained as an Advanced EMT, and who have a current AEMT license in the state of Utah, Should be allowed the privilege of placing peripheral IV's in patients who are admitted to the Bone Marrow Transplant service at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital at that time.

It would be beneficial for all staff on the floor if there was an individual present who was proficient in placing peripheral IV's. In the past, patients have remained without IV access for up to 7 hours, which can be potentially life threatening due to the inability to administer fluids and other potentially helpful medications and blood products.

HCAs who have a current AEMT license would be required to complete 30 peripheral IV, and 10 ultrasound peripheral IV placements, that would need to be signed off by the Charge Nurse or Nursing Educators, before placing peripheral IVs in patients who are currently admitted to the BMT service.
