Texas Republicans just launched a full-on attack on democracy, suddenly redrawing districts in absurd ways that aim to make Congressional elections irrelevant, and ensure Republican victories. Without debate, without discussion, and without regard to the law or the Constitution.
But Texas Democrats fought back hard and smart. Republicans might have the votes to pass the changes, but they can only hold the vote if they have a quorum (a minimum number of members present). So Texas Democrats went on a road trip. They left the state -- meaning no quorum = no vote.
Republicans have gone ballistic, threatening to arrest the Democrats, put them in jail, and call them mean names. But they couldn't force them to come back.
Eventually, the Republicans may get their way. But at least temporarily, Democrats have been able to halt the GOP action long enough to shine a spotlight on a thoroughly un-American move Republicans had hoped to carry out quickly and quietly. And they've given Democrats across the nation a lesson in how to do more than just write sternly-worded letters. And they've given a burst of momentum to Democratic counter-attacks.
