Save Pacific Bluefin Tuna!

The Pacific bluefin tuna population is down by ninety-seven percent. So why is this fish species entirely unprotected by federal regulations?

Overfishing has brought the Pacific bluefin to the brink of extinction. The fishing industry itself has been left to manage this resource on a volunteer basis. That means that any goals for replenishing the community of bluefin are unlikely to be met. The vast majority of bluefin that are harvested are immature. They are caught and killed before they have time to reproduce. The solution is to put this fish on the endangered species list. Doing so would make it illegal to take Pacific bluefin out of American waters.

It's time for the federal government to take action to save this important species. Please join me in asking the United States National Marine Fisheries Service to list the Pacific Bluefin Tuna as an endangered species.

Dear National Marine Fisheries Service:

I was distressed to learn how depleted the Pacific bluefin tuna population has become. While I understand that seafood is a popular and healthy choice for meals, the need for sushi does not trump the overall right of an animal species to go on existing. It seems that this species is down to three percent of its original numbers. That's a terrible shame, but it is something that you can correct. Please list this species as endangered.
