While there have been no sightings of the shrew since 1984, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature has declared the long-suspected reality tragically official. Unfortunately, the shrew is only one of many mammals lost forever in Australia. Since 1788, almost 40 Australian mammals have gone extinct, which is a rate far higher than any other country.

In 2022, Australia pledged to halt the extinction crisis, demonstrating an exciting commitment to the country's species, many of which are currently at high risk.
But, while many scientists agreed the pledge was necessary, some warned that the roughly $224 million the Australian government had set aside to tackle the extinction crisis was not enough. Some estimate that over $1 billion per year is needed to actually end extinction in Australia. That may seem like a lot of money, but keeping species alive is priceless.
Plus, the country recently announced a plan to spend over $200 million on eleven nuclear-powered submarines. If the country can spend the money on less than a dozen subs for war, it can certainly spend less than 1/200th of that cost on preventing species from being lost forever.
