FDA: Close the 56-Year-Old Loophole Allowing Harmful Chemicals in Food!

  • von: Kristi Arnold

An old rule in the FDA is allowing manufacturers to slip in harmful chemicals by saying in-house scientists deem them safe. Let's let the FDA know that this loophole is unacceptable.

The Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) designation given by in-house scientists allows harmful chemicals, according to the National Resources Defense Council. The NRDC report, Generally Recognized as Secret highlighted the inadequacies of the FDA system.

The GRAS amendment was originally developed to allow common ingredients like vinegar to be exempted. However, manufacturers today are using the loophole to slip new chemicals into food without letting the FDA know.

Despite the FDA's reservations about many chemicals, harmful ingredients are being allowed in food due to this GRAS loophole. Tell the FDA to close this 56-year-old loophole and stop allowing harmful chemicals to slip into our food.

Dear Madam,

We the undersigned ask that you close the 56-year-old GRAS loophole.
