SULLIVAN COUNTY, Tenn. — Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said it rescued three black bear cubs Sunday after their mother was struck and killed by a car on U.S. Highway 19 in Sullivan County.
The agency responded to the scene around 8:30 a.m., where the deceased bear was removed and three traps were placed in the area to catch the cubs, according to the TWRA.
A few hours later, a neighbor saw the cubs on video near the accident. The agency said the video confirmed that the bears were cubs, not older yearlings.
By 4 p.m., all three cubs were caught and taken to a Wildlife Management Area for evaluation. According to TWRA, the cubs appear healthy, each weighing about 12 pounds and have shown typical bear behaviors, like climbing trees and avoiding humans.
The TWRA released the cubs into a remote area of the Cumberland Mountains.
“While this is not an ideal situation, our goal is to give these cubs the best possible chance at survival,” TWRA Bear Program Manager Dan Gibbs said.
Gibbs noted that the cubs were released in a remote, low-density bear area.
The agency said it's working with the Appalachian Bear Rescue, however, the organization isn't currently accepting cubs.”
No other help was solicited before the still nursing cubs were turned out on their own.
Demand that these babies get the help they need and are then released when able to sustain on their own.
