Take a Stand for Women’s Reproductive Rights — DEADLINE: October 3, 2017

I’m a single woman who was raised Catholic in a small Kansas town — and I am sick and tired of men like GOP House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy trying to divide this country by dictating my reproductive rights.

Congressman McCarthy has announced that Republicans will vote Oct. 3 on whether to ban abortions after 20 weeks across the country except in the case of rape, incest, or a threat to the mother’s life. I need your help to stop them.

I believe that a woman’s decision of whether, when, and how to bring a child into this world should ultimately be her own. But even if you disagree, there are plenty of other reasons to oppose this legislation:

It will force women to carry pregnancies to term that are not viable, inflicting needless emotional suffering and damage to women and families across the country. Aborting a wanted but non-viable fetus is an excruciating, but often merciful, decision. It’s a decision that should be made solely by the women and families involved, not the government.

It is based on flawed science. The legislation argues that fetuses feel pain after 20 weeks of gestation. According to Kate Connors of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists:

“The science shows that based on gestational age, the fetus is not capable of feeling pain until the third trimester.”

It may be unconstitutional. In 2013, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled struck down Arizona’s 20-week abortion ban and the US Supreme Court declined to hear the state’s appeal.

It is a cynical distraction from other urgent issues. Congress should be addressing urgent problems that are affecting American women, children, and families right now. They could be working to help the millions of Americans impacted by the recent hurricanes, resolve tensions with North Korea, or even reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which provides access to healthcare for nine million children and is set to expire September 30.

We don’t have much time to stop this deeply flawed bill — Congress is expected to vote on the ban on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017. Please sign my petition now and urge Congress to OPPOSE this legislation now.
