I am watching "Monkey Life" - a programme set at Monkey World - a great primate rescue in Dorset, UK. It has said about chimpanzees captured in the wild ending up in research laboratories. Here, they are tortured psychologically and physically, through invasive brain procedures, including implanting recording devices into their skulls. They are also forced to sit for hours by their heads in front of computer screens and are deprived of water for days so that they will co-operate for rewards of juice. They may also be infected with viruses deliberately.
It is no longer legal to use chimpanzees in UK laboratories. However, macaques and, maybe, other primates are still used.
It is totally unacceptable to abuse these intelligent animals unnecessarily for human gain.
More reliable alternatives can be used in research instead of these poor monkeys. I absolutely care about human patients, but abusing and killing animals unnecessarily is absolutely wrong. The research can be done using more reliable alternatives. Animal tests can endanger human lives, too, with people dying due to using drugs passed as safe in animal tests, only for the drugs to later prove dangerous to humans. Thalidomide was passed as safe in animal tests, and caused birth defects in humans when used by pregnant women. The testing safety standards may have improved since then, but human lives could still be endangered, and medical progress delayed, due to animal tests. It has been said before potentially lifesaving drugs have been discarded due to their being proven unsafe in animal tests.
Nonhuman animals' physiology, even the physiologies of animals similar to humans like primates, is so different to that of humans; each species have different physiologies. Therefore, animal tests may produce unreliable results, endangering humans, delaying medical progress and needlessly subjecting those poor animals to torture and death at the hands of human "researchers".
Please find it within your heart to ban ALL use of ALL primates in research in the UK!!!
