Safeway: Stop GE Salmon from Reaching the Shelves

Genetically engineered salmon are now being considered for mass production by the FDA, and a lack of label regulation means shoppers will not see a distinction in grocery stores. Luckily, large grocers such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe's have banded together to refuse purchase of AquaBounty's controversial salmon, regardless of the FDA's pending decision.

Tell Steven Burd, Safeway's CEO, to stand in favor of the people's right to know what they're purchasing.

The campaign for Genetically Engineered-Free Seafood has teamed up with a variety of non-profits and grocery stores to take the reigns from the FDA. This pledge means that the FDA won't get the last word on the sale of modified salmon.

Barely more than a third of the public believe that GMO's are safe to eat, according to recent polls. The movement requires big names like Safeway to make a ripple. Help stop the FDA from exploiting the market's future.
Dear Steven Burd,

The salmon being built by AquaBounty for mass production are not the solution to the growing cost of real freshwater salmon. The FDA's pending decision to sanction the new organism notwithstanding, we want the real thing on the shelves — especially before labeling laws have come in place that clarify the distinction between natural salmon and the new GMO.

Hardly a third of the public believes that genetically modified organisms are safe to eat. Before the customer can be sure of what he or she is buying, stocking your shelves with GMO salmon may only bring an avoidable negative impact to your business.

I strongly encourage you to take a public stance on this issue with Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, among many others, who believe that the climate is nowhere near ready for the mass production of this altered organism.

Sincerely,
