Don't Let Seaport Construction Harm Endangered Dolphins!

Lyttelton Port of Christchurch (LPC) is proposing a seaport that could seriously harm the endangered Hector's dolphin, which lives in the development area.

The port's development plans include pile driving in 27 hectares of land. The noise from this process could potentially injure marine mammals active in the area, including endangered dolphins. Dolphins active within 2 kilometers of the noise could suffer physical injury, and the noise would mask vocalizations and cause changes in behavior, leading to population decline.

Green Party MP and conservation and fisheries spokeswoman Eugenie Sage says that LPC needs to put in place best practices to ensure marine mammals won't be injured by construction noise. These practices should include the use of bubble curtains to minimize noise.

Please sign the petition to urge LPC to do everything possible to protect marine mammals during development of the new port!
