Tell Republican Senators to Stop Blocking Votes

Goodwin Liu is a Rhodes scholar and professor of law at University of California at Berkeley. His mainstream views, backed by a passion for constitutional law, made him an ideal nominee for the powerful federal appeals court. And yet this May, Republican senators filibustered in protest of his nomination.

Unfortunately, this trend is not a new one; the rate of legislation affected by filibusters has shot up to 70% ever since Democrats took the majority in Congress. President Obama's nominee confirmation rate is half that of his predecessors.

With their unproductive and obstructionist tactics, Republicans in Congress seek to skew the checks-and-balances process unfairly in their favor. Tell Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell that these selfish measures are good for no one.
Dear Senator Mitch McConnell,

I am writing to express my concern with the recent filibuster blocking of judicial nominee Goodwin Liu from a seat on the federal appeals court. Liu has shown himself to be well-qualified for the position, and I feel that persistent delays to the appointment process will not be beneficial to anyone, regardless of party.

The filibuster rate has escalated to a whopping 70% in the last three years. Such behavior is both reprehensible and unproductive.

The filibuster method should be reserved for extreme occasions, not deployed on behalf of ideological niceties. I urge you to set an example by putting the good of your constituents ahead of your personal views.

Sincerely,
