Venezuela has been struck by two devastating earthquakes, with tremors reaching magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5.
At least 1,719 people have been killed and 5,034 injured, with many more feared dead and others left homeless or too afraid to stay in damaged buildings. Tragically, the death toll is only expected to rise, with thousands still missing.
As you read this, people are being rescued from piles of rubble. Our teams are already on the ground, assessing the needs of people who may need urgent rehabilitation support.
We need to act quickly to get emergency food aid and vital care to these people who will be traumatised by this disaster.
This is the most powerful earthquake to hit the country for over a century, and the impact has been catastrophic. There is significant concern among our staff about the possibility of further aftershocks and how the situation will develop.
