Urge North Dakota State University and Sanford Health to End the Use of Live Pigs for ATLS Training

Right now, innocent pigs are being killed in the trauma training course conducted by North Dakota State University (NDSU) and Sanford Health.

In the course, multiple invasive procedures are performed on live pigs. Not only is this practice cruel, but there are superior, nonanimal training methods readily available. In fact, this is the last trauma training course of its kind in the entire country that still uses animals!

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is urging the school and hospital to modernize their medical training and use the superior human-based training methods that spare pigs from suffering and death.

Join with PCRM and use your voice to stand up for innocent animals by asking the presidents of North Dakota State University and Sanford Health Dean Bresciani, PhD, and John Snyder, to replace the use of live pigs in their joint trauma training course. Together, we have a real chance of getting through to them.

We have provided text for you, but if you decide to write your own message, please be polite and encouraging.

Dear Dr. Bresciani,

I am writing to ask that you end the use of live animals in the NDSU-Sanford Health Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) program. Of the 385 surveyed ATLS programs in the United States and Canada, NDSU-Sanford Health is the only one using live animals. Every other surveyed ATLS program uses only human-based methods such as medical simulation, which is documented to provide equivalent or superior training compared to the use of animals. The TraumaMan System is a realistic anatomical human body simulator that has lifelike human skin, subcutaneous fat, muscle, and blood vessels. TraumaMan is endorsed by the American College of Surgeons, the organization that accredits ATLS courses, and is widely used.

Please end this educationally inferior and unethical practice immediately.
