I have spent years loving dogs, and I still cannot get the images out of my head from Palm City, Florida, where deputies pulled 36 Border Collies out of a single home covered in feces, living in a house with no working air conditioning, floors buried in waste and garbage. The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast, an organization that has seen its share of hard cases, called this the worst animal-hoarding case it has ever encountered.
The woman who lived in that house, Paige O'Donnell, has now been arrested and charged with dozens of felony counts tied to animal cruelty and torture. Records show animal services had been called to that same address roughly 20 times since 2020. Twenty warnings. Twenty chances for the system to catch this before it became a house full of suffering dogs. It didn't happen, and 36 dogs paid the price with their health, and in some cases, very likely their lives.
I am asking State Attorney Thomas Bakkedahl of the 19th Judicial Circuit to prosecute this case to the fullest extent of the law. Every one of those felony counts deserves to be pursued, not quietly plea-bargained down to a fraction of the charges. I want to see a permanent, lifetime ban on this woman ever owning or living with animals again, real restitution paid toward the dogs' extensive medical care, and a sentence that reflects the scale of the cruelty involved, not a slap on the wrist.
I also want Martin County's animal services system held to account. Twenty prior visits to that address without the dogs being removed is not a minor oversight; it's a pattern. I am asking State Attorney Bakkedahl's office to work with Martin County to review why previous complaints did not result in removal, and to push for the policy changes needed so the next dog in a home like this one doesn't have to wait for a case this extreme before help arrives.
The Border Collies pulled from that house are only beginning their recovery, bathed, medically evaluated, and now in foster care through the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. They deserve more than survival. They deserve a justice system that treats what happened to them as the serious crime it was.
