Stop Ethnic Violence in Nigeria

Over 10,000 lives have been claimed due to ethnic clashes between the indigenous peoples and the settlers of Nigeria--and that number is continuously on the rise. Although legislation passed in the 1999 Constitution ensures the inalienable rights of every Nigerian citizen, the government has failed to successfully enforce these laws. The "non-indigene" Nigerians are not treated as citizens in their own country and the reinforcement of these ethnic tensions by the government continues to segregate Nigerians and breed violence.

Take action and tell Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua that the federal government should enforce existing legislation prohibiting government discrimination against non-indigenes and promote actions that create a peaceful environment for all Nigerians.
Ethnic tensions continue to arise in Nigeria and are claiming the lives of too many people. Thousands of people are dying over the issue of "indigene" vs. "non-indigene." The Nigerian government has made laws to ensure and protect the inalienable rights of every Nigerian citizen, but the government has failed to enforce these laws.

Settlers or "non-indigenes" are Nigerians as well and they should be treated as citizens in their own country. Failure to provide support to your fellow country persons further segregates your nation and breeds violence.

The government must uphold the laws that were written in the 1999 constitution and further promote actions that lead to a peaceful environment.
