Protect the Right to Vote! Urge State Legislators to Stop Bills that Create New Barriers to the Ballot!

In 2018, Michigan voters overwhelmingly passed a ballot initiative expanding access to absentee voting and making it easier to register. Now some in the state legislature are working to pass a package of 39 bills that would put unnecessary barriers and hurdles between eligible voters and the ballot. These bills would:

  • Prevent votes from being counted by:
  • Forcing counting to stop and results be reported by noon the next day.
  • Preventing clerks from pre-processing absentee ballots more than 10 hours in advance of the election.
  • Enforcing overly restrictive signature verification rules which will result in valid votes being discarded.
  • Create new, unnecessary restrictions for voters by:
  • Making those who request absentee ballots by mail include a photocopy of their driver's license or state ID cards.
  • Creating unnecessarily restrictive, unrealistic and unfunded security protocols for secure ballot drop boxes.
  • Insert greater partisan control over election processes by:
  • Banning nonpartisan election challengers.
  • Making ballot box placement an issue of partisan advantage rather than voter access.

These bills will make it more difficult for local clerks to do their jobs, will throw out thousands of legal votes, and will dramatically hamper access to the ballot by disenfranchising low-income voters and voters of color through unnecessary red tape and bureaucracy. These bills also establish unnecessary, unrealistic, restrictive, and unfunded security protocols that will inevitably make it more difficult for people in our communities to cast their ballots.

Michigan's elections are already among the most secure and accessible in the country. This bill package will create new restrictions and barriers that will reduce voter turnout while doing next to nothing to improve election administration or security.

Join us in urging our state legislators to take action and vote NO on these voter suppression bills!

To the Michigan Legislature:

The right to vote is an essential component of our democracy. I know you take pride in this country and our fundamental belief in the right of every American to vote, just as I do. That's why I am writing today to urge you to vote no on any bill that would make voting more difficult..

There is no denying that Senate Bills 273-311 would result in fewer ballots being cast by eligible voters. These bills will make it more difficult for local clerks to do their jobs, will throw out thousands of legal votes, and will dramatically hamper access to the ballot by disenfranchising low-income voters, voters with disabilities, students and voters of color. These bills also establish unnecessary, unrealistic, , and unfunded security protocols that will inevitably make it more difficult for people in our communities to cast their votes.

Our democracy is strongest when we have the greatest level of participation by our citizens. Your most sacred role as an elected official is providing equitable access to the ballot to ensure that all voters can exercise their rights. You must avoid enacting legislation that could reduce participation in elections, particularly among historically disenfranchised communities, persons with disabilities, older adults, racial minorities and low-income voters. I encourage you to vote no on this package of bills which amounts to little more than a thinly veiled attempt at voter suppression.
