Protect Seacoast Families from Coal Pollution

Schiller Station, the 1950s-era coal-burning power plant in Portsmouth, is threatening the health and safety of families living in the Seacoast. It is owned and operated by Public Service Company of New Hampshire.
In 2010, the state of New Hampshire reported that Schiller Station emitted 3,255.7 tons of sulfur (SO2), 990 tons of nitrogen (NOx), about 15 pounds of mercury (Hg) and 1,102,319 tons of carbon dioxide. We can substantially reduce this harmful pollution by demanding that health-based standards apply to Schiller Station.

Subject: Schiller's Pollution Threatens Seacoast Families
Dear EPA Administrator Jackson,
I am concerned about the health impacts of the dangerous air pollution from Schiller Station, the coal-burning power plant on the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth, NH.
The air pollution from Schiller's stacks is predicted to put the air in the Seacoast area in violation the federal health standard for the harmful pollutant sulfur dioxide, which worsens adult and pediatric asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and other respiratory and pulmonary diseases. According to the American Lung Association, nearly 4,000 children and more than 17,100 adults in York County Maine are at risk from asthma.
EPA should enforce the health-based standards in the Clean Air Act for Schiller Station to reduce air pollution threatening our communities and make it safer for the Seacoast to breathe.
