Support a human rights-centered pandemic response!

The COVID-19 pandemic is not just a health crisis; it is a human rights crisis. Around the world, governments are taking advantage of the disease to seize power and crack down on dissent. In the United States, the Trump administration has used the pandemic to implement policies stripping asylum-seekers of rights and to criminalize peaceful protest.

At the same time, the government leaves countless people locked in prisons and detention centers, where spread of the virus is rampant.

Everywhere, the impact of COVID-19 is magnifying injustices that long pre-date the crisis, making the pandemic particularly devastating for Black and Indigenous communities. Colonialism, institutional racism, white supremacy, and other dominant systems of oppression exploit the many for the benefit of the very few. We need genuinely transformational change to avoid continued humanitarian catastrophe.

The virus may not discriminate; but unjust social structures do. There can be no solution to the COVID-19 pandemic that does not also address the systemic inequities and injustices this virus has laid bare.
