The stark reality is that accessing affordable housing is becoming increasingly difficult for many people in our community, and impossible for others.
When Jason, a young adult of 24 years, shared his story with Vinnies we heard just how debilitating the vicious cycle can be. "You don't have money, you can't have a shower, you can't tidy yourself up, you can't look for a job… No job, no money, no home, and there you go again."

At Vinnies we witness first-hand the impact of rising rents on people in our community, which are pushing individuals and families to the brink of poverty and homelessness.
- Lower income earners are being relegated to inappropriate dwellings and/or to the distant periphery of our cities.
- Single parents and people who receive Government income support such as the Newstart allowance or age pension are particularly impacted by the lack of affordable housing.
- Hidden homelessness is increasing with many people 'couch surfing', living in a state of uncertainty and, too often, staying in unsafe environments.
We believe that prosperity should be shared, but the housing market operates under unfair rules that need to change.
It is the responsibility of the NSW Government to ensure that all NSW residents, including lower income households, have access to affordable housing.
They should change planning laws so that in all new residential developments, at least 15% is set aside for affordable housing. This means that about 1 in 6 new units would be specifically allocated to people on low-incomes at a price that they can afford.
On Government-owned land, this should be at least 30%.
