Trans Woman Roxana Hernandez Dies in Custody of ICE While Seeking Asylum

Rest in Peace Roxana.

Roxana Hernandez, like many of the other members of the Central American migrant caravan that made its way to the U.S. border last month, was hoping for a better future.

On May 9th, the transgender Honduran woman showed up and asked for asylum, by May 25th she was dead. She never had the chance to make her case, never had the chance to live the life she wanted, free from fear of being abused and harassed just for being herself.

Instead, Hernandez died in a New Mexican hospital. Authorities say the cause of it was a heart attack, but immigration activists say her death could have been avoided had U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) not neglected her obvious medical needs.

Roxana was one of around 60 transgender women who left their homes in Honduras, El Salvador and other Central American countries for the U.S. The violence they face in their homelands is indescribable. One woman, also in the caravan, spoke of how she was targeted by gangs but when she refused to engage, she claims that members of the gang raped her and killed her father.

Transgender men and women face a special kind of danger in their homelands, more so than others who are also, rightly trying to escape the danger they left behind. It is for this reason that they should be given exceptional consideration when they arrive to the U.S. and seek asylum — because returning home could actually be a matter of life or death.

Please urge ICE to grant the remaining transgender women in the caravan asylum consideration. Don't allow another tragedy to happen. For Roxana and the rest of the women fighting for a better life in U.S. detention, sign the petition and support asylum for the transgender caravan members.
