FDA: Monitor Toxic Hexane Levels in Foods

  • von: Care2.com

Backyard grilling is a summer tradition that should serve up hearty flavor along with some healthy protein.

Yet a recent study found that most non-organic veggie burgers contain hexane, a pollutant and neurotoxin found in gasoline.

Factory workers exposed to this toxin risk skin and nervous system disorders -- yet we consume it freely in products with non-organic, genetically modified soy. The FDA does not regulate hexane levels in foods. Eighty-five percent of America's soy is genetically modified, and soy isn't just in foods like veggie burgers and soy milk. Soy can be found in energy bars, breads, crackers, cakes, cereals, instant coffee, soups, commercial meats, and many other foods.

Don't let toxins invade your pantry or ruin your backyard barbeque: tell the FDA to regulate levels of hexane in foods.

Monitoring levels of toxins like hexane in food will ensure that Americans get the nutritious, safe foods we deserve. As the head of the Food and Drug Administration, please support regulating hexane levels in food.
