The Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, California treats it's animals horribly. Their two bears live in a cement hole with a trickle of water and a fallen tree. No earth to dig in, no water to swim in. Their primates live in cold, cement exhibits. The chimpanzee, Bill, lives in solitary confinement. Yet, the zoo's curator, Ms. Gretchen Ziegler stated publicly that she wants to get mountain lions, jaguars and red pandas. Please contact the city council of Eureka and demand that they shelve Ziegler's plans and send their neglected animals to sanctuaries.

The Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka, California treats it's animals horribly.  They are having problems getting their accredation continued through the American Zoo and Aquarium Association because of their out-dated, inhumane bear and primate exhibits.  (The two bears are in a cement hole in the ground with a trickle of water and a fallen tree.  No earth to dig in, no water to swim in.  The gibbons and chimpanzee are in small cold, damp, cement exhibits that are falling apart.  The chimp, Bill, is in solitary confinement.)

Yet, the zoo's curator, Ms. Gretchen Ziegler, wants to get more big animals.  In the local newspaper, the Times Standard, she stated that she wants to get mountain lions, jaguars, and red pandas.  This zoo is a concentration camp for animals and they want more!

Please contact the city council of Eureka and tell them to shelve Ms. Ziegler's plans and insist that they send their neglected bears and primates to sanctuaries.

The Sequoia Park Zoo is a tiny zoo and cannot humanely take care of large animals.  It has been suggested that they turn it into a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center or a children's zoo with small animals like ground hogs, otters, and small local wildlife that cannot be returned to the wild due to injuries.  Please suggest that they implement plans such as these and focus on the relocation of the animals that they cannot properly take care of now.
