Stop China From Dining on Dogs!

You might think of dog as man's best friend, but in China, that pooch is just as likely to be the entree. In southern China, the town of Yulin celebrates dog slaughter with a dog meat festival on June 20 of every year.

Animal rights activists are rightly trying to shut down this annual travesty in southern China which does nothing to help the country's reputation. I find it interesting that the Chinese government has already distanced itself from these events and forbidden government employees to participate. Please join me in asking the National People's Congress to outlaw the trade in and consumption of dog meat.

Dear National People's Congress:

Putting dogs on the dinner table is doing nothing to help your international reputation. Outside China, people think of their dogs as family members. A dog meat festival, such as the one held annually in Yulin, just draws more attention to this highly unpopular practice. Dogs are hard workers and have earned their right to a place at our sides and in our homes. They tote our belongings, herd our livestock, and provide immense emotional and psychological support. Please start the process of outlawing the trade in and consumption of dog meat in your country.
