Don't cut funding for global health programs and put our health at risk

The President has proposed huge cuts to US assistance for global health and development – calling for slashing it by one-third. This is a mistake.

At less than 1% of the US budget, this funding saves lives around the world – and keeps us healthy here at home. It's a small investment that pays big dividends for America and the world.

Over the last 25 years, millions of lives have been saved thanks to US investments in fighting HIV/AIDS, malaria, and hunger. Child deaths have been cut in half. And extreme poverty is at an all-time low.

We also know that global health is American health. In an increasingly globalized world, where diseases cross borders with ease, we must continue to invest in global health to protect people in emerging economies and Americans at home.

These proposed cuts will put our country's health at risk, stifle innovation, and hurt our economy.

Tell Congress not to cut these critical investments that save lives, create jobs, and promote our values around the world.
Dear [Decisionmaker],

Cuts to US assistance for development – and global health in particular – will put our country's health at risk, stifle innovation, and hurt our economy. This small investment – 1% of the national budget – pays big dividends for America and the world.

In a challenging world, improvements in global health are a bright spot. Over the last 25 years, millions of lives have been saved thanks to US investments in fighting HIV/AIDS, malaria, and hunger. Child deaths have been cut in half. And extreme poverty is at an all-time low. American ingenuity and innovation has played a major role in this progress.

At the same time, we know that global health is American health. In an increasingly globalized world, where diseases cross borders with ease, we must continue to invest in global health to protect people in emerging economies and Americans at home.

Today, advances in technology present unique opportunities to tackle problems once thought unsolvable. Mid- and low-income countries are increasingly able and excited to partner in the fight to end poverty and eliminate deadly diseases; together we are making great strides. And public sector investments have encouraged more and more partnerships with the private sector to join efforts to solve global challenges. US leadership is critical to ensuring this progress continues.

Please support fully funding the International Affairs budget in fiscal year 2018 and help prevent disproportionate cuts to these critical programs.
