Senators Murray and Cantwell,
I urge you to take a balanced approach to reducing the deficit that includes new revenue.
[Your comment will be added here]
Congress and the President have already achieved more than $2 trillion in deficit reduction - about 3/4 from painful spending cuts. With a balanced approach, we can cut the deficit without hurting our economy, making it harder for working families to join the middle class, or limiting economic opportunities for our nation's children.
Some deficit reduction proposals target Medicaid for big cuts, largely by shifting costs onto states costs Washington State cannot afford. Deep cuts in federal Medicaid funding could cause many of Washington's seniors, children, and people with disabilities to lose access to needed health care. Other misguided proposals would cut the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, which help working families make ends meet.
I urge you to close billions of dollars in costly tax loopholes that go to the wealthiest households and special corporate interests who don't need them instead of balancing the budget on the backs of working families.
Sincerely,
