Reps. Irwin Tieng and Mariano Michael Velarde are proposing a bill that would criminalize the production, sale, and distribution of animal "crush" videos and other filmed acts of cruelty to animals in the Philippines. If it passes, violators could be imprisoned for three to seven years and/or fined P100,000 to P300,000.
Animal crush videos feature animals such as kittens, puppies, and mice who are slowly tortured to death for the sexual gratification of fetishists. These videos often contain footage of underage girls slowly crushing animals to death, usually by stepping or sitting on them.
A recent PETA Asia investigation into one case in the country found videos showing extreme cruelty to animals, including a rabbit as he or she was skinned alive, rabbits as they flailed and screamed while their ears were cut off and as they were set on fire, a dog as he or she was burned with a clothes iron, a monkey and several dogs as they were repeatedly hit in the eye with the sharp end of a stiletto heel, and puppies as they were crushed until they vomited their own internal organs.
We support banning animal crush videos and full prison sentences for those who produce and distrubute them.
