To Open a High-Volume, Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic in Sudbury, Ontario

We appreciate all support, but only signatures from residents of the City of Greater Sudbury area and the Rainbow District of Ontario are required. (For a map of the applicable area, please visit rainbowcountry.com)

Pet overpopulation is a serious problem. Shelters and animal-service facilities cannot accommodate all the animals that come to their doors. Euthanasia is not the answer for pet population control. Spaying and neutering pets reduces the number of unwanted animals coming in to shelters and reduces the burden on resources. Spay/neuter education leads to fewer homeless pets and leads to better care for all others.

The only way to keep numerous cats in the Greater Sudbury/Rainbow District from being euthanized every year is to keep them from breeding in the first place. Spay/neuter clinics work, but without support from our municipal government, a spay/neuter clinic for area dogs and cats will never happen.

Spay/neuter clinics have been successfully opened in Newmarket and Barrie. They offer low-cost neuters and spays for dogs and cats. For more information on this initiative, please visit http://www.spayneuter.ontariospca.ca

Ottawa and Calgary also have spay/neuter clinics using different models. See http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/animal_care/cats_dogs/clinic_en.html and http://www.calgarycitynews.com/2009/08/new-spay-neuter-clinic-opens.html

Of course, we need a made-in-Sudbury solution, and we need a solution as soon as possible. States Dr. Janet M. Scarlett, a veterinarian at Cornell University, "No other disease or condition of companion animals takes as many lives as euthanasia. In fact, no other disease comes close."

Please join us in encouraging City of Greater Sudbury Councillors to set up a task force to investigate spay/neuter clinic options for our community and report back.

Thanks! Merci!

We the undersigned, respectfully request that the Mayor and members of City Council set up a task force to investigate options for setting up a low-cost spay/neuter clinic in the Greater Sudbury area. A high-volume, low cost, spay/neuter clinic is truly needed in the Rainbow District as soon as possible.

The O.S.P.C.A. opened their first high-volume, low cost, spay/neuter clinic in Newmarket, Ontario in 2009. This facility is based on the "Humane Alliance" model (http://humanealliance.org/) which is used extensively, and effectively, across the U.S.  These clinics are open to all members of the public with no monetary or demographic restrictions. These clinics are also set up to become "self-sustaining" within a set period of time, if Humane Alliance protocols are followed. The O.S.P.C.A. has now opened a second such facility in Barrie, Ontario.

There are other models as well which have been spearheaded by municipal governments, and these are running in Calgary and Ottawa.

Pet overpopulation is at critical levels throughout Ontario because many pet owners simply cannot afford spay/neuter surgery fees. Thousands of healthy pets are euthanized annually in this province due to lack of available homes. High volume spay/neutering of dogs and cats has proven to be the ONLY long-term solution to pet overpopulation.

While the Rainbow District Animal Shelter does what it can to help, I, as a taxpayer, would like to see my hard-earned dollars used in a proactive manner to alleviate this problem at its source. With a spay/neuter clinic, we should see a huge reduction -- 75% over five years is the oft-quoted figure -- in the number of cats and dogs being abandoned to the shelter.

We want Sudbury to truly be a caring community for companion animals.

Thank you for your time and your consideration of this urgent situation.
