Plastic Ban: Durango Colorado
As of today, April 15, 2008 there have been 145 billion plastic bags consumed since January 1st, and still counting. There is a total of around a trillion bags a year which turns out to a million a minute. Out of these bags the United States uses an average of 380 billion a year. Only 1-2% gets recycled, the rest ends up in landfills, flying through the streets, in the ocean killing sea creatures, and in our national parks and wilderness areas. Plastic takes hundreds of years to biodegrade if they ever do. Every piece of plastic ever made is still around today. Paper isn't much better. 14 Million trees were cut down in order to make only 10 million paper grocery bags. Please think about what bag your going to use the next time your at the grocery store. Bring your own and save our planet!
The Plastic Bag Ban is something that Durango should think about to make our town cleaner, bring our community together, and set an example like San Francisco for others to follow. It all starts with us as consumer, business owners, and local lovers of the environment to make our voice heard and make a difference.
San Francisco has already saved 5 millions bags per month. With your help we could do the same thing and show the United States government that the people still can make decisions and a difference.
This is just the start of the fight to get ride of plastic bags. Please consider making a step in the right direction and help us out!
Thanks for your time!! Make your voice heard and change the world one act of random kindness at a time!
