The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department has extended the Montana wolf hunt from January 31, 2011 to February 15, 2012. This hunt should have ended in December 2011. This is the second time the Montana FWP Department has extended this hunt.
As of Thursday December 8, 2011, there have been 106 wolves slaughtered. The goal of the Montana FWP is to exterminate 25% of Montana's wolf population.
This will reduce the number of wolves in Montana to only an estimated 425 individuals.
The Montana FWP approved a plan to let wolf hunters help state and federal officials kill wolves. Hunters won't have to wear orange after the end of the elk and deer season. The Montana FWP commissioners also unanimously approved a proposal to allow livestock owners to select a hunter to kill wolves if they suspect a wolf attack. Previously, if federal Wildlife Services confirmed a wolf attack and made the determination that lethal removal of an animal was actually necessary, those agents would respond to the problem.
The new proposals regarding wolf management have a high potential for abuse.
This systematic extermination of Montana gray wolves is wrong and must end now.
