It is legal in New Zealand and many other countries to kill sharks for their fins. This has to stop. And we need to stop it.
Here is a brief list of things you can do to help sharks:
-Dive and snorkel with sharks. The more money that goes into shark tourism the more people will realize the value of living sharks.
-Refuse to eat shark fin soup and don't eat at restaurants that serve it.
-Encourage others to do the same.
-Seventeen countries have already banned shark finning. Find out if your country is one of them. If not, write your local government official asking them to ban shark finning.
-Demand that your country also stop the importation of shark fins.
-Start a letter writing campaign to the Secretary General of the UN requesting international bans on shark finning and the importation of fins.
-Keep informed of the issue online at: www.seashepherd.org, www.wildaid.org, www.cocosisland.org, www.sharktrust.org, www.iemanyaoceanica.org, www.tortugamarina.org, www.savingsharks.com and www.sharkwater.com.
Dear John Key,
Sharks are being finned and killed all around the world. A handful of countries have banned this inhumane act and made it illegal. These countries are setting a great example for others. Why is New Zealand not one of these countries? Why is New Zealand one of the countries contributing to the extinction of a species?
Shark finning refers to the removal and retention of shark fins and the discard at sea of the carcass. The shark is most often still alive when it is tossed back into the water. Unable to swim, the shark slowly sinks toward the bottom where it is eaten alive by other fish. Any shark is taken - regardless of age, size, or species.
Longlines, used in shark finning operations, are the most significant cause of losses in shark populations worldwide. Finning is widespread and is largely unmanaged and unmonitored. Shark finning has increased over the past decade due to the increasing demand for shark fins. Shark fins are used in shark fin soup which is a delicacy and tradition cure in some Asian countries. They believe that sharks have special healing powers because they say they don't get sick, and if they eat the shark, they will not get sick. However, this is not true, sharks can get sick and they do not have any sort of special healing power. It is estimated that 100 million sharks are killed for their fins, each year. Sharks only kill 5 humans on average, each year. One pound of dried shark fin can retail for $300 or more. It is a multi billion dollar industry.
Because of shark finning there has been a lot of devastation to shark populations globally. It is said that within a decade, most species of sharks will be extinct because of longline fishing and finning. Because sharks are such are huge and important part of the marine eco-system, killing them off is a very big mistake. Much of the oxygen produced in the atmosphere comes from the ocean, and because sharks are at the top, they control everything underneath. If there are no sharks, then the stability of the marine eco-system will be completely thrown off, jeopardizing our oxygen supply.
We are losing an incredibly amazing species. New Zealand shouldn't be one of the barbaric countries contributing to it. Please consider what you are letting happen here.
Thank you for your time to read this letter and take in what it has to say.
